Independent Work:

Page 60.  Find the paragraph that starts “He licked his lips…” and list THREE THINGS that are described as white. Why do you think the author chose to make these white? What could it symbolize?

Page 64. What unexpected thing does Mary ask Bigger to do? How does this make Bigger feel about her?

Page 65: When Mary says “isn’t there a song like that, a song your people sing?” — what does that make you think or wonder?

Page 66: What does Bigger associate Communism with? Why?
